The project aims to connect the local community with their government officials through a real-time messaging system connected to silicone LED light strips that resemble traditional neon signage. &nbsp;The public is invited to visit the project app and communicate with the artwork, sending messages via text that translate directly into cascading colours. Over the last couple of years, the City of New Westminster has seen significant change and turnover in the local government. A municipality’s city hall can be viewed as a place of friction, where town hall meetings convene, councillors assemble, and bills and bylaws come to pass. Friction Ridge is meant to bridge the gap between city officials and the public, forging a place for accountability, prospect, and possibility.The aim of this artwork is to provide a cathartic avenue for community members to metaphorically imprint their thoughts, ideas, and concerns onto the physical location of New Westminster’s City Hall.It’s an opportunity for locals to make their mark on the building that serves as the city’s headquarters, and is home to city council, the mayor’s office and various service departments. Each message that is typed into the website is ephemeral. There will be no log or record of the words entered online. Text will be transcribed into vibrant colours, poetically emoting in real-time.&nbsp; Messages will loop in a colour sequence until a new text is entered into the system. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Watch Video ︎ The Art of Fugue is a multi-channel video featuring five women working in trade industries. The artwork is a chorus of female performers telling stories through the repetitive actions and movements of skilled work. Edited using the traditional musical structure of a fugue, each screen acts as a singular voice contributing to the artwork as a whole. Arranged and composed using a metronome set to 80 beats per minute and a 4/4 time signature, the framework and timing of each video component is highly intentional. Similar to a musical composition, the videos harmonize in tone, texture, colour, rhythm and contour. The artwork is polyphonic, meaning there are multiple "melodies" that are simultaneously present. Highlighting women in trades is both an aesthetic decision and a symbolic choice. There is strength and resilience to be found in a performer whose work is in a typically male-dominated field. This contributes to the spirit of the video, with the intention of authentically capturing the tenacity and power of the female voice.[For reference, The Oxford Dictionary’s definition of a fugue is, a polyphonic composition in which a short melodic theme, the subject, is introduced by one part or voice, and successively taken up by the others and developed by their interweaving. Mary-Anne Bowcott - PlumberMary-Anne Bowcott is a Journeyperson, Plumber and small business owner from Vancouver Island, BC. She is an advocate for Women in Trades, providing support and mentorship to women throughout British Columbia.&nbsp; Her business, WestCom Plumbing and Heating, employs an all-female crew. Mary-Anne won the Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce Trades and Skilled Labour Excellence Award in 2017, and was the recipient of the Canadian Construction Association’s Person of the Year Award in 2019.Brandie Doucette - PainterBrandie Doucette is a Métis Citizen born and raised in Vancouver, BC. She studied at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in a number of trades, including Electrical Level 1. Brandie enrolled in a&nbsp; course for Métis Citizens that was an educational pilot project to train and employ railway conductors.&nbsp; Between her studies, she worked as a painter for various companies, learning the trade and accepting it as her calling. &nbsp;It is her belief that, “You do not choose painting, painting chooses you.” After working as a productions manager and learning the business side of the trade, she took a leap of faith and started her own company, FINE HOME PAINTING. When Brandie’s not busy running her business, she enjoys spending time with her 3 children, surfing, camping, reading and watching scary movies together.&nbsp; Her greatest joy is that of her family. Meg Iredale - ArboristMeg Iredale is an Arborist, Sawyer and Carpenter based on Mayne Island, BC. Having been home-schooled, she learned early to follow her interests and to push society’s expectations of what a girl can do! Meg has mostly been taught by mentors on the job, and enjoys taking part in the full process from Tree to Timber to Home. The artwork is intended to be shown as a large-scale exhibition with faux artifacts.&nbsp; Viewers will recognize the items within the three-channel video as the additional components in the exhibition. By incorporating antiquated objects and relics from the video, and presenting them in a museum-like manner, the aim is to challenge the audience’s perception of history and what can be percieved as fact, versus the illusary narrative produced by the artist. Joshua Watson’s Leg (In Four Movements), 2021Three-channel HD Video | 23’45”(In Four-Part Symphonic Form) Bruce Stens as Joshua WatsonRichard Smart as Henry NewburnSherry Duggal as Malin Sorsbie Structured as a four-part symphony, Joshua Watson’s Leg (In Four Movements), follows the pseudo-historical account of a grave accident resulting in the eventual anthropodermic binding of a disturbing “coroner’s report”. Bookbinder, Henry Newburn, comes across the body of Joshua Watson in the woods. Julia McIntyre on Bass Trombone9’10” This Is for You is an elegiac song featuring prominent Canadian bass trombonist, Julia McIntyre.&nbsp; Situated in an antiquated theatre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the video drifts through a musical lament, followed by an ode of praise, and eventually concluding with a movement of solace.&nbsp; The artwork is dedicated to the artist’s father, Murray Crewe (1960-2017), who was the longtime mentor of Julia McIntyre.&nbsp; A bass trombonist himself, he gifted his instrument to his student, Julia, after falling ill a few years before his death in 2017.&nbsp; As Julia’s physical breath moves through the instrument, the bass trombone becomes an extension of her body, and her musical voice reverberates in an empty theatre.&nbsp; A now weathered object, the trombone itself holds physical remnants of the artist’s father.&nbsp; His fingerprints are embedded within the brass.&nbsp; Skin and oil residue is ingrained throughout the instrument, showing decades of handling and wear. &nbsp;This Is for You is a narrative about memory, loss and wading through grief. Alternative Planet | 2’30”Video &amp; Textural Soundscape by Emilie Crewe Original Piano Music Composed &amp; Performed by Ralph Crewe 4K (+ SD) Video Collage w/ Hi-Res Digital Stop-motion "Scanimation" Set in three phases, [Alt Plan’t] tells the story of a lone Astro-gardener documenting their experience on a distant exoplanet. Through metaphors and overlapping terminology, the narrative creates a cross-bridge between astronomy and anatomy, highlighting themes of transcending the corporeal body into planetary orbit across space-time. [Alt Plan’t], short for “alternative planet,” explores the concept of seeking out the 'habitable zone' of extrasolar planets for human ecological benefit and colonization—a controversial topic. This particular planet is inspired by Gliese 667Cc, located 23.62 light-years away. The video was produced from footage collected during an artist residency in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 2021. Visuals of the Fagradalsfjall Volcano and the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant represent the exoplanet, while an array of planetary pill bottles drifts through interstellar space. The gardener character was created as a stop-motion “scanimation” using hundreds of digital still images captured from a flatbed scanner. Bera:tón is a research project that began during my time spent in Iceland.&nbsp; My focus was mainly on Nordic feminism and the history of women’s rights in Iceland. Gradually, I began to explore a deeper, feminine connection to the earth, and in particular, volcanoes and geothermal power. The title is derived from two Icelandic words, bera meaning “to carry”, and tón, as in a musical tone or note.&nbsp; The name of the project is a double entendre for the word, baritone, which is a (typically) male singing voice. bera = to carry in Icelandic&nbsp; //&nbsp; tón = a musical note or “tone” in Icelandic [to sustain a note : to carry a tune : to carry that weight] bar·i·tone/ˈberəˌtōn/: a male singing voice; an adult male singing voice between tenor and bass. Here, it’s mostly moss and hardly any trees. The volcanic landscape is carpeted in Cetraria Islandica, which is actually a lichen species (commonly referred to as a moss) that is extremely fragile and grows at a remarkably slow rate. It takes generations to see change in a society. Iceland is no different. As an outsider, the portrayal of this country is romantic and idyllic, but there is a lot that is swept under the carpet: underlying misogyny, continuing gender inequality in the labour market and severe xenophobia, particularly against Polish immigrants. Depicted in the video is a hermetic, elderly woman reflecting on memories, antiquities and the space around her. As the video progresses, the object of the book takes on a sculptural and landscape-like characteristic. As pages flip by, fragments of text are highlighted, offering the viewer a spontaneous poetic narrative. The audience may piece together snippets of words, creating a different viewing experience with each screening. The title references the books that are in the video: a mixture of classic literature, non-fiction wilderness/travel, and self help books.
