ORINTHONICS, 2020

ORINTHONICS, April 2020 | 2’53”
Animation & Textural Sound by Emilie Crewe
Original Music Composed and Performed by Ralph Crewe

Strange things happen in isolation. The story of an elusive earthworm, a hungry thrush and a curious birdwatcher takes shape over one-thousand digital scans.

The title is a blend of "ornis" coming from the Greek word for "bird", and "thonics" (or chthonics), meaning "beneath the earth" or "subterranean".

* ORINTHONICS was screened at the El Ojo Iluso Festival at Bordes Fundación Cultural in San Cristóbal, Venezuela in 2020 and was awarded Best in Video Art.  It was exhibited as part of the 2020 Photophobia: Contemporary Moving Image Festival in partnership between the Art Gallery of Hamilton + Hamilton Artists Inc.  ORINTHONICS has also been screened at the 2020 Iso Film Festival (IFF), Madrid Indie Film Festival in Madrid, Spain (2020), the Insomnia International Open-Air Animation Film Festival in Kaluga, Russia (2021) and the International Video Poetry Festival, Videobardo in Buenos Aires, Argentina (2021).  In 2021/2022 it was exhibited through Broadcast Lab at Arts Commons in Calgary, Alberta, Canada as part of a group exhibition curated by Sanja Lukac.  The artwork has also been shown publicly on the Reno Canyon Flats Video Wall commissioned by the City of Reno Nevada, as well as the Mount Pleasant Community Art Screen, a digital public art urban screen curated by grunt gallery in Vancouver, BC on the stolen, sacred and ancestral lands of the sḵwx̱wú7mesh, sel̓íl̓witulh xʷməθkʷəy̓əm nations.
